Professor Agbaje attended the University of Ibadan and graduated with B.Sc. degree in Political Science, First Class Honours in 1979. Indeed, he won the Faculty Prize for the Best Graduating Student in the Social Sciences in the same year. Thereafter, he proceeded to the University of Lagos, where he obtained an MSc. Degree in Mass Communication in 1981. Professor Agbaje furthered his postgraduate studies at the University of Ibadan, where he earned his Ph.D degree in Political Science in 1988.
Between 1981 and 1984, Professor Agbaje served as a senior journalist with several media organizations, including The Punch (1981-1982), the New Agency of Nigeria (1982-1983), The Guardian (1983) and the Democrat (1983-1984). He joined the services of the University of Ibadan on 30 March, 1984 as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Political Science. He was promoted Lecturer II in 1986, Lecturer I in 1989, Senior Lecturer in 1992, and Professor in 1998. Professor Agbaje has served on several University statutory bodies, including the University Senate (1994-1996, 1998 till date), Appointments and Promotions Committee (2003-2005), Finance Sub-Committee of the Development Committee (2003-2005) and the Development Committee (2003-2005. In addition, he was Dean, Faculty of the Social Sciences (2003-2005).
He was Visiting Commonwealth Fellow at the International Development Centre, Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford (1991-1992), and Visiting USIA Scholar, Trans-regional Centre for Democratic Studies (TCDS), Graduate Faculty, New School for Social Research, now New School University, New York (1998). He was Faculty Resource at Mellen University, Turks and Caicos Islands, the Caribbean, and Faculty Co-Chair for Session on Globalization, Democracy and Development at the University of Cape Town/New School University Democracy and Diversity Institute for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Fellows, Cape Town (2000).
Professor Agbaje has served as consultant and resource person to national and international bodies, including the Research Unit of The Guardian newspapers, the Presidency, the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), Lagos, the National Planning Commission, the Federal Ministry for Solid Minerals Development, International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), ECOWAS, Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA), South African Institute of International Affairs, African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Conflict (ACCORD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Associates in Rural Development/USAID, the International Republican Institute, and the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Nairobi, among others.
He was member, Visitation Panel to the University of Agriculture, Makurdi in 1999. He also served on the National Defence Policy Formulation Committee, Ministry of Defence (2000-2001), and has been Visiting Professor, National War College since 2001. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Goree Institute, Goree Island, Senegal, and was Chair, Steering Committee (2000-2002) and General Co-editor (1999-2000), Nigeria Contact Group of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and member, International Steering Committee, Consortium for Development Partnerships (Dakar and Evanston, IL) (2004 till date).
He is the Editor-in-Chief, Review of Leadership in Africa (Ibadan; Cambridge, UK; and Kansas) (February 2006 till date); Corresponding Editor, Media, Culture and Society, (London) (1992 till date); member, Editorial Board, International Journal of African Studies (Wilberforce, OH) (1998 till date) and Studies in Politics and Society, Journal of the Nigerian Political Science Association (2004 till date); and was member, Editorial Advisory Board, the Nigerian Army Quarterly Journal, among others.
He is married to Dr. Adebola A. Agbaje, A Librarian, and the marriage is blessed with children.
